Governor Kathy Hochul boldly suggested that black children from the Bronx are so severely disadvantaged that they ‘don’t even know what the word ‘computer’ is.’ In response to this, Stephanie Hamill, a writer for MRC, and host Eric Bolling, joined forces on The Balance at Newsmax to put these racist comments under the magnifying glass.
While Hochul may believe she’s Ronald McDonald handing out Happy Meals of innovation and diversity, unfortunately for her, things aren’t that simple. Her remark is severely dismissive and belittling of the experiences and capabilities of these children. It is shocking that such a comment would come from the Governor of the state of New York.
Mainstream media outlets covered her remarks initially and even her apology that followed. However, their interest appears to have cooled down since then. The lack of follow-ups, the radio silence – it’s all a little suspect.
Now, consider this scenario. Had a Republican uttered those exact words, picture the very different response. No doubt, the airwaves would be chock-full of outrage, with wall-to-wall news coverage, and the chatter wouldn’t be about anything else. You could bet your bottom dollar there would be a surplus of calls for the Republican’s resignation.
Why is it that there’s apparent silence when a Democrat is at fault? Such double standard can’t be ignored.
The derisive remarks of Governor Hochul can’t just be swept under the rug. In her pursuit of image crafting as ‘innovator-in-chief’, she negated the experience of many hard-working black children growing up in urban settings. Her offhanded remarks showed a clear disconnect with the reality that these children live. She neglected the fact that there are kids striving and succeeding despite the hardships they face due to systemic issues.

Kathy Hochul’s ill-considered remarks about black children in the Bronx are a glimpse of the lack of understanding that plagues our elected officials. And the lukewarm media response is yet another reflection of the double standard that exists within our media. It’s past time these issues were dragged out of the shadows and dealt with, heads on.
