Democrats believe that more laws and bans will solve the issue of mass shootings in America. The problem with that argument is that it’s wrong. The recent shooting at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois proves that.
There are a couple of laws and bans that were in place when that shooting took place. First, the city of Highland Park itself had an assault weapon ban that had been in place for 9 years and was in place on the day of the shooting.
Second, the state of Illinois has a red flag law that was in place on the day of the shooting. Red Flag laws were part of the gun control package that just passed through both houses of Congress and was signed by President Biden.
The 21-year-old who is accused of killing seven people during a Fourth of July parade had been reported by police “as posing a ‘clear and present danger’ after alleged threats to his family in 2019. Sergeant Chris Covelli, a spokesperson for the Lake County Sheriff’s office, “said Crimo had two previous encounters with law enforcement – an April 2019 emergency-911 call reporting that he had attempted suicide and another in September of that year regarding alleged threats ‘to kill everyone’ that he had directed at family members,” reports Reuters. They continued, “[p]olice responding to the second incident seized a collection of 16 knives, a dagger and a sword amassed by Crimo in his home, though no arrest was made as authorities at the time lacked probable cause to take him into custody, Covelli said.” Covelli also stated, “There were no complaints that were signed by any of the victims.”
Even though the 2019 incidents with Crimo took place in a state with a red flag law that is designed to prevent people deemed to have violent tendencies from getting guns, nothing happened to Crimo as far as making it so that he could not purchase any weapons. Crimo was able to purchase five firearms, including rifles and pistols all legally in the state of Illinois.
This may be the problem:
Highland Park had an assault weapon ban in place on the day of the parade shooting
Democrats mean well with their efforts at gun control. They want to stop the mass shootings that are taking place all too often in our country. So do Republicans. Liberals and conservatives want the same thing in this regard, but more and more laws are not the solution. The Highland Park incident makes this crystal clear, and yet now Kamala Harris is crying for an assault weapons ban. What do you think should happen to stop the mass shootings in our country?
