A Naperville police officer was seen shooting down a man with a hatchet in a bodycam video released last Tuesday.
The shooting surrounded a June 3 traffic stop in Naperville, Illinois. In the bodycam video, an officer can be seen conducting a traffic stop when an unrelated vehicle pulls up beside the one that was being pulled over by police.
A man immediately gets out of the second vehicle and charges at the officer with a hatchet in his hand. He was fired upon and later died at the hospital. The officer was not injured. Watch the encounter below on YouTube (Warning: It is graphic.)
“A man quickly exited the vehicle and charged at the officer with a hatchet in his hand,” Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres said.
The man was later identified as Edward Samaan, 28. Police spoke with his family to find out what prompted the attack, but no details have been released. They are trying to determine if the man that attacked their officer was tied to the person in the car getting pulled over.
The officer involved in the incident has been on the force for 22 years.
After the shooting, police cars, a robot and officers in protective gear could be seen x-raying suitcases found in the suspects car. Police have not said what was found.
This video just illustrates the amount of stress that law enforcement deal with on a daily basis. Who could have expected to deal with this during a routine traffic stop? Luckily, the officer reacted quickly and there was no further harm done to anyone else except for the perpetrator. What do you think caused this man to rush at police officer with a hatchet?
