Fox News recently ruffled feathers after airing a piece for Gay pride month highlighting a California family and their story of helping their child transition from a female to a male.
“14-year-old Ryland Whittington is a typical southern California teenager,” reported Bryan Llenas for Fox News. “And the Whittingtons along with his mom, dad, and sister are a typical family. The only difference in Ryland’s eyes is what this family can mean to the tens of thousands of kids under 18 who identify as transgender.”
Ryland, the subject of the piece, says that the family came forward so that other transgender children “could see like that there is another family out there that is going through what we’re going through or there is another family who is proud of who they are.”
According to the Whittington’s mother, their biological daughter identified themselves as a boy before they were even able to speak and came out at the age of 5 years old.
“I could see it. It wasn’t him trying to be a brat. It was like painful,” Ryland’s mother said. “It was painful for him to have to wear feminine clothing and for us constantly telling him that you are a girl.”
The mother said that it was hard for the family to reconcile their child’s change in gender, but leaned on their conservative faith to get through it. She said that they would “rather have a living son than a dead daughter.”
“For me it’s a deep spiritual belief. We believe in God, and He created us the way He wanted us, well then yes, he created Ryland just the way he is,” said the mother.
Many conservatives online were upset that formerly conservative Fox had even run the segment. Conservative talk show host Ben Shapiro called it a “complete betrayal of anything remotely resembling conservatism or decency.”
Commentator Allie Beth Stuckey says she was “stunned that Fox News ran a segment celebrating a girl whose parents “transitioned” her into a boy when she was 5.”
Host of the Erick Erickson show commented that the piece was total “propaganda” considering its timing in the child’s life.
According to data from the Trevor Project, younger generations identify as transgender at an increased rates from adults. This came from a national study capturing data from 118,803 high school students in several states.

It is still considered a new and controversial procedure to transition a child to a new gender.
